Introduction
As a software developer by trade but wine enthusiast by passion I realized while undertaking sommelier training that the level of digitalization in the wine world was less than impressive. There's no shortage of books and articles describing the wine regions and wines of the world, quite the contrary. But nowhere could I find an easy to use service that through the lens of a digital interactive map would help me study and memorize all the key wine regions of the world. Hence I started to build one. It certainly helped me get through the exams, and hopefully it can be a valuable assistant to you as well, regardless if you are a student or just a wine enthusiast with a knack for maps.
My hopes are that the free maps and information provided on this site will help curious wine-lovers to learn even more about the wonderful world of wine.
Maps
All map polygons have been drawn manually based on publicly available information. Hence the maps should be considered as approximations rather than exact descriptions of region boundaries. Note also that I have made certain compromises regarding the distinction between regions and appellations. If there are overlapping appellations in the same regional area where one is bound to the geographical administrative domain, ex Barolo DOC, I have chosen not to include overlapping appellations based on grapes/winestyles, such as Barbera d'Alba DOC.
Since the maps represent existing factual administrative areas in each country, copyright is not applicable. Using or copying these maps are free for whatever purpose, but I would appreciate it if you acknowledge the source of these maps. The only exception to the above is the USA AVA maps which have been downloaded from https://www.ttb.gov/images/AVA/. Some of them have also been reduced in size before made available on this site.
Descriptions
All descriptions have been generated through Anthropic's claude-4.6-sonnet model and then proofread.

http://www.theglobalwinemap.com is a free site with the intention to spread information about the wine world to anyone who wants to learn more.
The platform on which it runs is however highly customizable and can be tailored to meet different business needs. Another implementation of the platform is already available with Google Maps, enabling a different level of interactivity with vineyard search and zoom, vineyard data, hotels, restaurants, as well as built-in street- and satellite view. Add-on services like vineyard travel routes can be incorporated with limited development times. Integration into an existing site is straightforward, and all look and feel can be tailored to fit the existing design.
