The Global Wine Map is a Progressive Web App (PWA) — you can install it on your device and use it like a native app, with a home screen icon and full-screen experience. No app store required.
Desktop Installation
Google Chrome
- Open theglobalwinemap.com in Chrome.
- Look for the ⊕ install icon in the right side of the address bar.
- Click it, then click Install in the prompt.
- The app opens in its own window and a shortcut is added to your desktop.
Alternatively: three-dot menu (⋮) → Cast, save and share → Install page as app…
Microsoft Edge
- Open theglobalwinemap.com in Edge.
- Click the ⊕ install icon in the address bar.
- Click Install in the prompt.
- A desktop shortcut and Start Menu entry are created automatically.
Alternatively: three-dot menu (…) → Apps → Install this site as an app.
Firefox Not supported
Firefox for desktop does not support PWA installation. We recommend using Chrome or Edge for the installed app experience on desktop.
Mobile Installation
Android — Chrome
- Open theglobalwinemap.com in Chrome.
- Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Add to Home screen.
- Confirm the name and tap Add.
- The app icon appears on your home screen.
An install banner may also appear automatically at the bottom of the screen — tap Install there to skip the menu steps.
iPhone / iPad — Safari
- Open theglobalwinemap.com in Safari.
- Tap the Share button (the box with an arrow pointing up) at the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
- Confirm the name and tap Add in the top-right corner.
- The app icon appears on your home screen.
Must be done in Safari — other iOS browsers (Chrome, Firefox) do not support PWA installation on iOS.
After Installation
Once installed, The Global Wine Map opens in its own window without browser chrome (no address bar, no tabs). It behaves exactly like a native app.
The app caches resources via its service worker, so it loads quickly on repeat visits even on a slow connection. An internet connection is still required to fetch map tiles from OpenStreetMap.
To uninstall: on desktop, open the app and click the three-dot menu inside the app window → Uninstall. On mobile, long-press the icon on your home screen and choose Remove or Delete.
